Septoplasty

What is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a rhinoplasty surgery that involves correcting a deviated nasal septum. The septum is a wall surface made up of bone and cartilage that acts as division between your nostril.

A deviated septum takes place when the septum is displaced away from the nose.  With a deviated septum, the nasal flow on one side is generally smaller than the other side. The septum can be curved slightly upwards making you nose appear crooked and unbalance to your face. A deviated septum is one of the most common request in rhinoplasty and surgery is often the best means of repairing it.

Preparing for Surgery

Two weeks before your surgery, the doctor may asked you to stop taking any medications like are aspirin, painkillers or any herbal supplements which can thin out the blood and cause serious bleeding.

An anesthesiologist will present during the surgery to put you under, check your condition before, throughout, and right after your surgical treatment. You could be asked to stop eating and drinking after twelve o’clock at night the evening prior to the surgery.

Inform the doctor of any type of medications you are currently taking, including drugs, supplements and over the counter natural herbs. Make sure to inform your medical professional if you have any sort of allergic reaction or if you have experienced hemorrhaging issues in the past.

How is Septoplasty performed?

Your doctor will make a cut inside the wall on one side of your nose. The mucous membrane layer that covers the wall surface will be raised. Your cosmetic surgeon will take out or relocate any cartilage or bone that is clogging the area. Hereafter, your doctor will place the mucous membrane back in its position. This membrane layer will be covered by stitches, splints, or packaging course.

Surgical treatment takes around 1 to 1 1/2 hrs. Patients can usually go home that same day. You can go home on the exact same day as surgical treatment. After the surgery, both sides of your nose will be securely packed (stuffed with cotton or sponge products) to prevent nose bleeds. Typically this packaging is taken out 24 to 36 hrs after surgical treatment.

Septoplasty is performed for the following reasons:

1. To fix a crooked, angled, or flawed nasal septum that obstructs the air passage in your nose. People with this concern often take a breath via their mouth and are more probable to obtain nasal or sinus infections.
2. If your nose bleeding is uncontrollable.
3. To mend an opening in the nasal septum. This is called nasal perforation.
